Korn,
the masters of the mosh-pit, the Californian creators of crushing chords and
over-power riffs, spearheaded a much-anticipated three-band grinding metal
extravaganza to the Plymouth Pavilions, and certainly left a lasting
impression.
Deathstars had the dubious honour of kick-starting the evening, and did a
great job, supplying a brand of raw edged power metal that had a definite
lightside/darkside train of thought imbedded in it, they impressed enough to
persuade me to buy a tee shirt – nuff said!!!!
Texan female fronted pain-metal exponents Flyleaf, took the stage next and
tried so very hard to produce an impression that would make a sledgehammer
to a walnut look subtle. Singer Lacey Mosley squeezes every vocal, every
expression and every last possible drop of emotion into every song, and to a
large extent it worked, but they slightly travelled into the realms of
overkill, I would love to see them again, as they have some good songs but
they can probably deliver better than tonight.
Korn came tonight with a simple plan, play hard, play fast and then play
harder! The reception they received was staggering, the support that they
still command after nearly fifteen years culminated in everyone there
expecting nothing but total head-banging hedonism, and looking around me,
very few were anything less than engrossed. I really wanted tonight to rise
to the level of anticipation that I had built in my mind, but it wasn’t the
most impressive set, or the most free-flowing performance that I wanted to
be treated to. When Korn are in full flight they are simply awesome, not
many can put bagpipes to metal fans and produce a huge roar of approval (ok
– AC/DC can) but tonight was Korns night and I bet Korn remember Plymouth,
because Plymouth will remember Korn!
