The unexplained phenomenon that is
James Blunt
took the capacity crowd at the Plymouth Pavilions by storm on Friday night,
and I have to admit that, for the life of me, I cant see how he does it!
Bearing witness to James in action, there is no denying that he has the
ability to wrench high emotion from his army of adoring fans, a large
portion of who seemed to be female, like few others that have ever graced
the Pavilions stage. He arrived onto the fully carpeted stage, guitar in
hand, to a massive reception, wearing an even bigger grin on his face, and
started the set with, Give Me Some Love. He obviously enjoys performing, and
he obviously loves talking and interacting with the hordes of fans that pack
in to see him in action, and they love him, as almost everyone that I have
talked to that saw him on the night thoroughly enjoyed themselves, I didn’t,
so obviously I am missing something! Now I have been known to quite like
monotonous singers, Suzanne Vega and Dido spring to mind, but with James
Blunt I found that his slightly raspy voice doesn’t quite seem to fit his
style of song, but on the night I definitely seemed to be the exception to
the rule. Great receptions to all the songs were given by the crowd
throughout the set, notably for High, You’re Beautiful and 1973, as he gave
the crowd exactly what they had come to see, a performance full of feeling,
sensitivity and, that extra something else that I obviously missed!
Tonight passed me by, but go see James Blunt for yourselves and make up
your own minds, I wasn’t converted to a fan on the night, but judging by the
faces of the people as they left, I have a feeling a few were, so maybe next
time it could be you.
