One
of the new pretenders to the crown of Indie chart kings,
The
Hoosiers
came
to the Great Hall at Exeter University last Friday night and did their level
best to convince all present that they are worthy of the crown!
It was the final show of the current tour, and it was a joy to be present at
a gig where the bands first agenda was to entertain and instil a sense of
fun throughout the entire evening, the publicity to the gig called for fancy
dress, and it was rewarded with a huge number of very high quality costumes
littering the arena.
The Hoosiers own slant on the Indie pop scene is that they have created a
sound that the band describes as, a shiny great dollop of Odd-Pop. Not for a
long time have I seen a band take the fun in music so seriously, and after
tonight I think that Odd-Pop may stay for a while yet. There were two
supporting bands on the night, Envy and other Sins, and The Script, both did
themselves no harm at all, and surely earned themselves a few more fans to
help their own rise to stardom. But with the whole stage to work with, it
was The Hoosiers that controlled the evening, pulling songs mainly from
their debut album, The Trick to life, they ploughed through a set that was
much too short, My personal favourite of the night was a pulsating rendition
of the hit single, Goodbye Mr A, but it was pushed close by crowd stomping
new single, Cops and Robbers and of course the Grande Finale of the evening,
Worried about Ray. I had expected the atmosphere to be cranked sky high for
the entire set, but The Hoosiers proved more versatile than that, with
slower acoustic numbers to compliment the high energy songs, which when
added to the on stage antics produced a top gig that should last in the
memory for some time to come.Greg Taylor
