There was Blood, gore and
much, much more in the new circus of horrors show – The Asylum, which rolled
into the Princess Theatre Torquay.
The show is
not for the faint-hearted with nudity, swearing graphic tricks and illusions
all high on the agenda. All I’ll say is that if you are squeamish then this
production just is not for you, this show is all about the shock factor.
The
thousand or so in the audience loved every second of what can only be called
a modern day freak show.
All the
acts, including the man who has the worlds strertchiest skin, to the human
pin cushion, who happily skewers his face with metal rods, all received
massive applause.
One of the
most shocking moments was when a dwarf attached a vacuum cleaner to a part
of the body that he shouldn’t and dragged it around the stage with only the
suction hiding his modesty, at this point my head was in my hands.
The
acrobats in this crazy circus were first class. The elegant and beautiful
aerial drapes used in so many shows were replaced by long metal chains,
which one performer wrapped himself in and swung around in the rafters. His
agility was mind blowing.
He also
featured later in the show balancing on a human hamster wheel… His moves on
the wheel were jaw dropping. Four Kenyan acrobats were also thrilling to
watch.
Circus of
Horrors is carefully conducted by Dr Haze and is complimented by live rock
music.
Admittedly
this show may not be everyone’s kettle of fish, but it is hugely
entertaining in an odd kind of way.
