Home Park Football Club, Plymouth, is getting into a habit of welcoming
music legends to the ground.
Only last month Elton John performed a cracking set at the venue, and on
Tuesday it was the turn of
George Michael.
The crowd were kept waiting for the singer for more than an hour due to a
technical problem, but when he did finally grace the stage he arrived in
style.
Almost in silhouette George appeared on screens singing the cover Song For
The Siren. It wasnšt until the end of this track that the audience got to
actually see the star.
He was finally revealed to the adoring audience when sliding doors,
disguised in the huge screen at the back of the stage, opened. As the
Grecian singer belted out dance pop track Fast Love the crowd erupted. This
was heightened when George casually walked around the giant semi circle
walkway, which gave fans the chance to see their idol up close.
During his two hour plus set, George didnšt disappoint. He sang hit after
hit, including Too Funky, Outside, Star People and Amazing (which he
dedicated to the man he loves).
He also revisited his deep past, singing classic Wham songs. This sent the
crowd into overdrive. You couldnšt help sing and dance along to pop classic
Išm Your Man and The Edge of Heaven- it was almost infectious.
His early solo material such as Faith and Freedom 90 were also highlights of
the night. Ballads such as Jesus To A Child and Careless Whisper were also
well received, but he somehow looked lost on the stage when the pace was
slowed down.
Georgešs set was triumphant due to the string of hits he performed and also
due to the amazing stage set.
The giant screen, which cascaded down the back of the stage along the floor
and poured into the audience, was extremely effective. The stunning graphics
displayed on the screen- including a beautiful sunset and psychedelic disco
inspired patterns- really gave the concert another dimension.
The tour titled 25 live, which celebrates a quarter of a century since
George became a solo artist, really shows this maestro knows what how to
rock a crowd.
There is no doubt about it, George Michael is a music great.
