The Master of schmooze
Bryan Ferry
enthralled a dedicated “In Crowd” at the Plymouth Pavilions on his current
tour. With a huge back catalogue and colourful history of songs to choose
from, the hugely successful solo artist and front man of the inspirational,
Roxy Music, picked twenty-one of the best to make sure that all present
wanted to, Stick Together, and enjoy the whole set.Bryan started at the very
top with, The In Crowd, from the 1974 album, Another Time, Another Place, it
set the pace for the rest of the night perfectly, galvanising an already
expectant crowd with his suave, stylish showmanship that still captivates
and enthrals. Producing his customary harmonica at regular intervals, very
little was left out, Don’t Stop the Dance, Tokyo Joe, and Roxy Musics only
number one, Jealous Guy, were all gratefully received with great respect and
enthusiasm from the very knowledgeable crowd. Backed by a superb band and
fantastic trio of backing singers, tonights sound was superb, doing supreme
justice to some really high quality songs.
Bryan
also exhibited his versatility by covering a great version of Bob Dylans,
Knocking on Heavens Door, which was highly polished and soulful. The end of
the main set was far too early and yet another classic track, Lets Stick
Together brought it to a grand finale. But ass usual, more was to follow
with the obligatory encore containing two mega classics to close the
evening; Love is the Drug and finally, Slave to Love which left the
audience, and me, believing that they had just witnessed a true British
legend at work.
