The King of Hearts, the singing legend that is
Andy Williams, stepped onto the
Plymouth pavilions stage to a fantastic reception from a very partisan crowd
eager to witness a true icon of music deliver a performance to remember.
Born Howard Andrew Williams in December1927 at Wall Lake in
Iowa, Six decades now cover the career of Andy Williams since he landed the
top jobs as resident vocalist on the highly-rated Tonight show hosted by
Steve Allen and from there his distinctive voice also landed him a recording
contract with Cadence Records, and in 1956 he made the top ten with his
rendition of Canadian Sunset. But he had seen success at just 14 with his
siblings and the great Bing Crosby, with one of the greatest hits of the
40’s, “Swingin’ on a Star”.
Arriving on
stage to the dreamy overtures of Moon River, he instantly showed that his
voice has lost nothing of its clarity, colour or power, which sometimes
happens with the passing of time. From that point the memories came flooding
back to those of the age to remember them first time around, and to those
younger members of the audience his smooth, velvet delivery of his instantly
recognisable numbers such as Moon River and Cant get used to losing you,
were a joy to witness. His movements across the stage were fluid and
stylish, with his ever-present beaming smile attached to his face, tonight
this flamboyant performer really did supply Music to watch girls go by, and
as one of the worlds ultimate entertainers he proved that he still
thoroughly deserves his icon status in the world of entertainment.
