The
Circus of Horrors brought its new show, The Evolution, to Plymouth, bringing
with it a fantastical amalgamation of odd-ball, often cringe-worthy circus
acts, witchdoctors, Voodoo acrobats, bendy bodies, demon dwarfs, blood
curdling stunts and flying Vampires, to mention just a few of the delights
on offer. Presided over by The Undead Ringmaster Doktor Haze, and all backed
by the live devil driven rock n' roll of the The Interceptors from Hell, it
could never be described as a show for all the family with nudity and some
quite serious gross out humour, but if that is your thing it is a fantastic
escape from reality for an all to short two hours. Personally from my
viewpoint at the very front, I had a great time, with the added bonus of a
large camera lens to get a close up view of the action; the special (and
real) effects were excellent as were the actual circus acts. Those at the
back on the balcony must have struggled to see some of the more intricate
stunts and performances, even though there was a large screen at the back of
the stage to help the audience, it was not the best quality picture and not
quite big enough for a venue the size of the Pavilions, but at least they
didn’t get covered in fake blood and other unidentified liquids like we did.
Since its debut performance at Glastonbury in 1995 the Circus of Horrors has
a proven record as a rock’n’roll circus of a most unique, escapist nature,
and I think is well worth a viewing, but only if you are of an open minded
persuasion.
